We’d love to have you come out and shoot a challenge on the Backfire Youtube channel. This page has all the information you’ll need to know about coming to shoot with us, so please read carefully before you apply.

UPCOMING CHALLENGES

Fri, July 10, 2026 , All Day
Competitors will begin at the same starting point and be given GPS coordinates leading them to a mountainside where a hidden deer target has been placed. The goal is to locate the target and make a clean hit before anyone else. However, while competitors are searching for the target, the “watcher on the mountain” (Jim and Garrett) will be positioned on the mountain (wearing hunter orange so you know where we are) using spotting scopes and binoculars to try and spot them. If a competitor is seen, they are immediately eliminated from the challenge. The winner is the first shooter to successfully locate the “deer” and make a kill shot without being spotted.

Watcher On The Mountain Challenge
Fri, September 25, 2026 , All Day

For Browning Day (taking place on September 25th, 2026), we are looking for 10 participants who own a Browning rifle to come out to the Backfire range and show off their setup. Any caliber or configuration is welcome, as long as it is built on a Browning platform. This event is designed to bring together a range of real-world setups—from factory rifles to lightly customized builds—to see how they perform side by side.

The purpose of this challenge is to create a true community-driven evaluation of Browning rifles. Rather than relying on a single test rifle or controlled lab conditions, we want to gather data from a variety of shooters using their personal rifles, optics, and preferred ammunition. This approach provides a much more honest and representative look at what the average Browning rifle is capable of in real-world conditions.

Participants will put their rifles through a series of practical shooting challenges designed to test accuracy, consistency, and overall performance at distance. By combining results across multiple shooters and setups, we aim to build a clearer picture of how these rifles perform outside of ideal conditions—just like they would in the field.

Whether you’re running a completely stock rifle or a dialed-in hunting setup, this is an opportunity to put your X-Bolt 2 to the test and contribute to a broader understanding of its true capabilities.

PROCESS FOR COMING TO A RANGE DAY

  1. Read this entire page with information
  2. Add your info at the bottom of this page so we know what you’re interested in.
  3. We’ll email you when the sign up is active for a particular challenge. Act quickly when you see that email, because the spots will go fast. We’ll send out new challenge invites each month.
  4. Sign up for your shooting date when you get the email and shoot with Jim!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • How to make the challenges fun to watch for the audience
    • We want to select someone for a challenge who has a COOL GUN to show off, has a fun personality, and who can SHOOT! Nobody wants to watch someone struggle to find the target in their Mossberg Patriot’s scope. So when you apply, think of what you can offer to a viewing audience.
      • If you’ve got a super cool sniper rifle to shoot a challenge with, it’s more fun to watch. Now, if you do want to shoot with a cheap military surplus rifle, that might be fine if you also are making some CLAIMS about how good you can shoot with it. That’s cool too, but come confident if you’re using cheap gear–don’t make excuses.
      • We also want INTERESTING people on the videos. A 12 year old girl who shoots lights out? Sounds interesting! A former marine scout sniper? Interesting! Guy that’s killed an elk at 1,000 yards, interesting! Grandpa shooting a Mosin that he used in a war? Interesting! Just a regular 39-year-old, pudgy, semi-balding guy? So lame! Oh shoot… that’s me. If you’re a regular dude, pop some caffeine before we shoot and be FUN, laugh, make a joke, be confident and make some bold claims about what you can do. Be fun to watch.
      • This shouldn’t be your first rodeo. If you haven’t even practiced at 1,000 yards, don’t sign up for a 1,000 yard challenge. If you’ve never shot a pistol in a competition, don’t sign up for the speed shooting pistol challenge, etc.
  • Travel
    • You are responsible for your own travel costs to come shoot with us. We wish we had the budget to pay for everyone, but we do have a cool range experience for you once you’re here.
    • Once you’re accepted into a shooting challenge for a particular day, you’ll be in a Whatsapp group with other participants so you can communicate with them to split a hotel or rental car if you wish.
    • The Backfire Range is located in a remote area near Beryl Junction, Utah.
      • Nearest Airports
        • 2.5 hours from the Las Vegas Airport
        • 1 hour and 10 minutes from the small St George Utah Airport
        • 4 hours from the Salt Lake City Airport.
        • It’s almost always cheaper to fly into Vegas, but sometimes you might find a lucky flight to St George.
        • You’ll need to rent a car to get out to the range.
      • Nearest Hotels
        • Your best bet for a hotel is in Cedar City, Utah, which is just 35 minutes from the range.
        • St George, Utah is another option and it’s an hour from the range.
  • Range Day
    • Our challenges are always on Wednesdays, and we start right around sunrise. You’ll need to be in town the night before so you can start first thing the next morning.
  • Liability and Conditions
    • Because our range is on agricultural land and is not open to the public at large, it isn’t set up for those that may have physical limitations that would make the activity unsafe. The ground is uneven and has lots of loose dirt and rock. You’ll need to climb a short ladder to shoot from the elevated platform so we can ensure that bullets are going down into the ground and not overshooting the berm. Know your limits and if you can’t meet those physical needs, this may not be a safe activity for you. We’re happy to accommodate where we can, but please be aware of some limitations for safety.
    • By attending an event at the Backfire Range, you agree to hold Backfire LLC, Safe Gun Range LLC, and their employees and representatives as individuals harmless for any personal injury you may incur. You are responsible for your own safety. Shooting can be a dangerous activity, so if you don’t want to risk any harm to yourself, don’t attend. If you choose to attend and some idiot shoots you, your issue is between you and the idiot. Don’t drag us into it.
